TRiO ASEMS

The TRiO ASEMS Program is 100% funded through the a grant from the U.S. Department of Education under the Higher Education Act of 1965 in the amount of $220,000 to serve 120 participants annually. The program offers support from the time that students enter the program through graduation.

Eligibility

TRiO ASEMS is specifically for University of Arizona undergraduates pursuing majors in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM), including health sciences, who meet at least one of the following:

  • First generation college student (neither parent has completed a 4-year degree)
  • Demonstrated financial need, or come from a limited income family
  • Have a documented disability verified by the Disability Resources Center

Year 1:

SCI 195B Success in STEM class

SCI 197C Professionalism in STEM class

Strong academic & personal support to balance school/life, learning strategies, & confidence building

Connect to career interests early through research  shadowing, career exploration, networking

Peer mentoring and study groups with learning coaches

Year 2:

SCI 297B Research Readiness class

Strong academic & personal support to balance school/life, learning strategies, & confidence building

Connect to career interests early through research  shadowing, career exploration, networking

Peer mentoring and study groups with learning coaches

Year 3 - graduation:

Opportunity to serve as a Peer Mentor or Learning Coach

Choose a career track (research, graduate/professional school, industry)

Career Mentoring

Financial planning beyond college

Opportunity to participate in a paid summer research experience through the ASEMS STARS Program

Throughout entire program:

Program workshops, STEM community activities and faculty mixers

Financial aid & scholarship advising

Individual support from professional staff

Assistance in applying to research programs & internships
